Math:
We have begun a new unit this week, Numbers to 100. This unit is an extension of similar concepts covered in Numbers to 40- which we have continued diligently working on!- so your student should make the connections fairly smoothly. If not, spend extra time solidifying their understanding. Give your child plenty of practice with strategies for addition and subtraction with renaming. Remember, students have a place-value chart and a 100-chart in their binders if you need them.

On a scheduling note, there will be a couple of full lessons assigned on Mondays in the upcoming weeks due to activities on Tuesdays. This will enable us to stay on track to finish Singapore 1B by the end of the year.

Flashcard Games for math facts (or phonograms!)

Spelling:
Lesson 27 may be tricky for some students because of what is known as the cot/caught merger. In some areas of the country, the /ŏ/ sound in cot is different than the /au/ sound in caught. In other dialects, the two vowel sounds have merged together and both words are pronounced with exactly the same /ŏ/ sound. If you're curious about the difference, check out this video
If your student has the merger, the words in this lesson might sound like they should be spelled with O instead of A. You can remind them of our OPG lesson about these words where they learned that an A followed by two L's or an A after a W makes it's third sound. Those clues can be a reminder to spell /au/ with A.
This can be a "deceiving" lesson that seems easy when it's introduced because many of the words have the same -all spelling at the end, but be sure to include it in your review as time goes on to confirm it's been truly mastered.

Reading:
In this week's SPIRE decodable reader, you may need to help your student with a couple of r-controlled vowel words that we haven't taught yet, like "where" and "your." Again, these decodables are written using phonograms that should be very familiar, so they are a great opportunity to practice proper phrasing, expression, and reading at a smooth, conversational pace. It's even better if your student reads the book several times. Please monitor your student for any guessing, and remind them to look at every sound in each word.

Decodable words in "A Beautiful House for God" from the Early Reader's Bible (sight words in parenthesis): A, house, for, God, (what), is, King, he (said), it, will, be, find, the, best, trees, must, (have), all, so, men, went, far, they, cut, big, stones, walls, some, with, gold, and, cloth, when, at, days, at, last, (was), done, come, see, told, came, (to), good, they, sang

Decodable words in "Birds with Food from a Man" from the Early Reader's Bible (sight words in parenthesis): with, food, a, man, had, (to), run, he, told, the, king, (what), God, (said), but, did, not, like, how, bad, (was), so, kill, you, must, hide, from, I, will, show, but, eat, no, food, at, gave, each, day, sent, now, had, good, him, thank, you, me

Geography:
Southern Africa Map and Song will be due 4/16. Students should be able to point to each country as they sing/recite the names. This is the final remaining part of Africa that we have yet to memorize!

History:
Here are some questions for discussion as you teach SotW Chapter 35 (part 1): Why do you think Caesar told the Romans only about his victories and not his defeats? Is not sharing the whole truth the same as lying? Why does "Crossing the Rubicon" mean that you're about to do something you can't undo? Would you have crossed the Rubicon if you were Caesar?

Journal sentence: When Caesar returned to Rome, he was too powerful to be arrested.

Reminder: The Agora Project due date is approaching! Project guidelines can be found here. This project will be presented by the students on April 28th. They are encouraged to wear Greek attire/costume to school that day to lend authenticity to their project.

Science:
This week is part 1 of our study of marine mammals, which will include seals, sea lions, walruses, sea otters, polar bears, and manatees. We will do the blubber protection activity on pg 51-52 in class. It's a perfect hands-on way to appreciate God's special design for cold water mammals!

Journal sentence: Marine mammals must come to the ocean surface to breath air.

Memory Work:
Quarter 4 poem:  Rock of Ages will be due 4/30. Here is a link to the song that we practice in class. This artist does substitute "commands" for "demands" in the 2nd stanza, so I will accept either of those words as correct.

Books of the Old Testament: Psalms - Malachi due 4/23. When we finish this section, we'll have memorized the order of all the books in the entire Bible! Here is a link to the song we practice in class. As always, if you or your child are already familiar with a different song, I'll assess that no problem, as long as the books are said in order.
